80’s INVASION @ 9pm

80’s INVASION takes the music of the ’80s very seriously. This is the music we listened to on our original Sony Walkmen, the bands whose names we stenciled on our pee-chees, jeans, Nikes, and in some cases, all over town. When MTV first came around, these were the bands whose videos we watched all night at our friends’ houses, and the first concerts we went to. Some of our most memorable experiences (ahem) occurred listening to these songs. This music matters and we care enough about it to do it right.

Your favorite doorman and Rock guitarist TROY HILL puts together an amazing show of rock and dance hits from the 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s. Come party with and get your dance on with THE COVERS! (Formerly BAM) as they take over The Swiss.

geeks who drink: PUB QUIZ @8pm (FREE)

What’s a pub quiz?

Simply, a quiz game played in a pub. It’s an Anglo-Irish tradition, but our goal is the same: to foster friendly competition, and promote social drinking. A noble cause!Does it cost anything?

With rare exceptions, no. You should buy food and drinks though. Our business model is no big secret: We drive business to our host venues or we get fired. So just ordering water is NOT cool. Plus, fish have sex in that stuff.

Do I need to sign up beforehand or can I just show up and play?

Just show up. Team size is limited to six. Play solo if you’d like, but don’t blame us if you’re lonely.

All right, so what’s in it for me?

Besides a couple hours of free entertainment, the top teams get bar gift certificates. Plus there are chances to win free pints (or gift-certificate equivalents) for answering five bonus questions throughout the evening. We also have bizarre prizes courtesy of our weekly Bonus Email Question. Finally, your team can revel in the eternal glory of having your photo posted on this here website.

What’s the quiz format like?

The quiz consists of eight rounds of eight questions each, played by teams of up to six people. Questions are read aloud by the quizmaster and teams write down the answers, turning them in at the end of each round.

Rounds 1, 4 and 6 are themed rounds – anything from “Eight Questions About Sex That Won’t Make You Too Uncomfortable” to “TV Shows Your Parents Watch.” Round 2 is a music round worth double points: name the artist and title for each song clip. Round 3 is a multiple choice round or a speed round. Round 5 is a visual round based on a printed handout. The all-audio Round 7 usually covers movies or TV shows, and is worth the standard eight points. Finally, Round 8 is always 16 points on Random Knowledge.

One round can be jokered, doubling your points for that round only (yes, the 16-point rounds are fair game). The team with the most points after eight rounds is the winner.

STRANGELY ALRIGHT @ 9PM

Strangely Alright is a 6 piece Power Pop Band from the Seattle, WA area that has, as Rockford Rowley from The Weekly Volcano says, “an undeniable emotional appeal. Ringing, triumphant chords and lyrics that allude to conquered tribulations immediately make the music relatable to everyone.

GRIT CITY THINK & DRINK (formerly Science Cafe’) @6:30pm

The ASARCO smelter in Ruston, Wash., was in operation from the 1890s to the 1980s, during which time it contaminated the south-central Puget Sound region with heavy metals, including arsenic and lead. With 83% of the lakes in the zone of deposition having surface sediments exceeding published “probable effects concentrations” for arsenic and lead, there is evidence for possible ongoing environmental health concerns.

Arsenic is a priority Superfund contaminant, neurotoxin and carcinogen. However, the human health and ecological implications of this contamination are unclear due to an incomplete understanding of arsenic bioavailability in urban waters, which are typically affected by nutrient-rich conditions. Our work looks to quantify primary drivers of arsenic mobility, bioavailability and ecological toxicity in urban lakes.

Dr. Blair will give a short talk—about 10 minutes—and then perform 8 original songs from her CD, Little Queenie, which was released in July of 2016. Joining her onstage will be Bradly Miranda (drums), Jay Allen (bass, lead, banjo, and mandolin), and Jon Parry (fiddle).
