NEW YEAR’S EVE PARTY w/ ’80s INVASION

Come ring in 2018 with 80’s Invasion and your friends here at The Swiss! Grab your favorite friends and get your tickets now at Brown Paper Tickets to secure your spot at our Black & White 80’s Spectacular! Dance the night away to the feelgood music that defined the sound of the 80s: pulsating techno, danceable pop, quirky new wave and crossover rock.

80s Invasion takes the music of the ’80s very seriously. This is the music we listened to on our original Sony walkmen, the bands whose names we stenciled on our pee-chees, jeans, Nikes, and in some cases, all over town. When MTV first came around, these were the bands whose videos we watched all night at our friends’ houses, and the first concerts we went to. Some of our most memorable experiences (ahem) occurred listening to these songs.

Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz @ 8pm FREE

What’s a pub quiz?

Simply, a quiz game played in a pub. It’s an Anglo-Irish tradition, but our goal is the same: to foster friendly competition, and promote social drinking. A noble cause!Does it cost anything?

With rare exceptions, no. You should buy food and drinks though. Our business model is no big secret: We drive business to our host venues or we get fired. So just ordering water is NOT cool. Plus, fish have sex in that stuff.

Do I need to sign up beforehand or can I just show up and play?

Just show up. Team size is limited to six. Play solo if you’d like, but don’t blame us if you’re lonely.

All right, so what’s in it for me?

Besides a couple hours of free entertainment, the top teams get bar gift certificates. Plus there are chances to win free pints (or gift-certificate equivalents) for answering five bonus questions throughout the evening. We also have bizarre prizes courtesy of our weekly Bonus Email Question. Finally, your team can revel in the eternal glory of having your photo posted on this here website.

What’s the quiz format like?

The quiz consists of eight rounds of eight questions each, played by teams of up to six people. Questions are read aloud by the quizmaster and teams write down the answers, turning them in at the end of each round.

Rounds 1, 4 and 6 are themed rounds – anything from “Eight Questions About Sex That Won’t Make You Too Uncomfortable” to “TV Shows Your Parents Watch.” Round 2 is a music round worth double points: name the artist and title for each song clip. Round 3 is a multiple choice round or a speed round. Round 5 is a visual round based on a printed handout. The all-audio Round 7 usually covers movies or TV shows, and is worth the standard eight points. Finally, Round 8 is always 16 points on Random Knowledge.

One round can be jokered, doubling your points for that round only (yes, the 16-point rounds are fair game). The team with the most points after eight rounds is the winner.

STRANGELY ALRIGHT, DARBY PICNIC, AVENGERS UK @9pm

STRANGELY ALRIGHT and DARBY PICNIC, AVENGERS UK  they’ll share their ear candy and play Christmas songs to make it truly the best time of the year!

Take Weezer and sprinkle with some Bowie, Recovery, Peace and Love and then add confessional lyrics ala John Lennon and you have the colorful indie rock of STRANGELY ALRIGHT,that has, as Rockford Rowley from The Weekly Volcano says, “an undeniable emotional appeal. Ringing, triumphant chords and lyrics that allude to conquered tribulations immediately make the music relatable to everyone. Time can have a tricky way of beating people down and telling them to forget who they wanted to be and who they are. The fact that some members of the STRANGELY clan are in recovery brings to mind the reality that people can find what was once lost.

So Regan’s 80’s pop star experience, Ken Schaff”s driving hard rock influences, Jason Bair’s rocking military precision on drums, Ray Hayden’s keyboard crush on all things prog rock, Sean Van Dommelen’s crunchy white boy blues and Troy Moss’s southern tinged leads all collide together creating their unique raw, energetic, sound deep seated with emotion. Lane’s charismatic presence and ability to get asses out of their seats and the underlying lyrical messages of hope, empathy, and love make each new catchy STRANGELY ALRIGHT song an audience favorite!

DARBY PICNIC   Take a little Power Pop, a bit of Punk, a smidge of Americana, and a willingness to do whatever strikes the fancy, and you get Darby Picnic. Started in 2014 by Lee Gregory, DP is a five piece band from the Pacific NW that classifies themselves as Post Medieval Psychedelia. There are at least three songwriters in the band – Lee on Keys and vocals, Kent Beatty on guitar and vocals, and Troy Moss, also guitar and vocals. Rounding out the band are Terry Hickey on bass, and Rickie Ray Heinzman on drums.

AVENGERS UK   Hometown musicians paying tribute to the British Invasion. Veteran band members James Cook, Tod Sharon, Jeff Noyes and Steve Senna rock British classics.

CHINA DAVIS 20TH ANNIVERSARY w PIG SNOUT @9pm

Please join us in celebrating 20 years since CHINA DAVIS’ first music release!

CHINA DAVIS recorded their “Entrance” ep in August of 1997 with the help of Jefferson Angell (Walking Papers, Staticland, The Missionary Position, Post Stardom Depression, Broadcast Amphetamine, Prayer Factory and Sedated Souls) and Scott Mills at his studio, Cottonwood.

We’ve come a long way since the summer of ’97 and we’re celebrating our place in the Tacoma music community by sharing the night with our friends PIG SNOUT and some very special guests during our set.

Now that CHINA DAVIS has been a band for two decades, it has given me the chance to reflect and maybe even try to figure out what my brother Ted and I might represent. We’re kinda the Mick and Keith of no name, no label, unknown, bad looking, no style pub band’s of the northwest. We’ve been called by press asking us if they could talk to CHINA, “Oh, I thought she was a girl”… It’s been assumed that we were a cover band, nope, all original. We’ve played in almost every bar in Tacoma and Seattle and we can still walk down the street! What a career!

But, in this invisibility that is CHINA DAVIS we have found freedom that many bands have never enjoyed. We don’t have the backing to release album after album. But, we have an undying love for making serious music and writing the best songs we can write. We have a lot of fun being ourselves, as it should be. I feel like we’re what bands should be. Not worrying about popularity, sales, whether we’re punk, rock, classic rock, indie rock, folk music… who cares about that empty stuff anyways? We keep growing, we keep changing, we keep developing new sounds and ideas. We’re all those things!

-Ben

PIG SNOUT is: Lucien and Dahlia are brother and sister and both switch between drums and keys. Justin/dad plays guitar.

This is a project started by Justin/dad in March of 2014 to help the kids know all the sides of music and playing in a band. From learning an instrument, to writing songs, to recording, setting up shows, dong the artwork, naming the band and songs and everything else that goes into being in a band, they get to make the decisions as it is primarily theirs. Dad will more than likely get kicked out one day as these kids are going to far surpass him musically at the rate they are going..
