Cruzan has been in production since the early 1800’s and has been managed by the Nelthropp family all along – for 8 generations, to be exact – despite having been purchased by large multinational brands multiple times.
The people of St. Croix are known as Crucians, and the name Cruzan harkens back to the people of this beautiful island while the flavor of the rum highlights both the open air distilling facility with ocean breezes and the locally grown sugar cane that influence each barrel and bottle.
Composition
Cruzan rums are crafted of pure local sugar cane, and depending on the style of rum bottled are either distilled seven times or aged in Jim Beam barrels. Their methods have been improved and expanded upon by the same lineage for over 200 years, so they truly have their methods down to a science.
While the rums are in the “affordable” price range, they are carefully and methodically crafted to suit everyone, whether sipped or mixed.

Cruzan’s 9-spice rum blends an expertly selected variety of spices for a smooth, complex flavor. The spices are: allspice, vanilla, cinnamon, pepper, ginger, nutmeg, clove, mace, and juniper berry. While it’s not a dark rum, this style is just as smooth as a dark-style rum.
Cruzan is equally renowned for its aged dark rums as it is for its clear whites. These are aged in Jim Beam barrels for a buttery smooth finish and that woodsy, smoky flavor. 1) Single Barrel Rum Old Fashioned
- 2 parts Cruzan® Single Barrel Rum
- 1/4 part Muscovado Syrup
- 2 dashes Orinoco Bitters
Stir all ingredients and pour into an Old Fashioned glass with a large ice cube.
2) Cruzan Blue N Bazil Fiz
- 1 1/2 parts Cruzan® Blueberry Lemonade Rum
- 1 Lemon Wedge
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 10 Fresh Blueberries
- 5 Basil Leaves
- Soda Water
Combine all but soda in a shaker tin with ice. Shake vigorously for 10 seconds. Double strain into an Old Fashioned glass. Add ice and top with soda water. Garnish with blueberries and 1 sprig of basil.
3) Cruzan Kiss
- 1 part Cruzan® Strawberry
- 4 parts Rose Champagne
Chill the rum and strain into a flute. Top with champagne.
4) Cruzan St Croix Zen Tea
- 1.5 parts Cruzan® 9 Spiced Rum
- 1 tea bag vanilla ginger green tea chai
- Hot water
Pour rum in a pre-heated coffee mug, add tea bag and fill with steaming hot water. Garnish with an orange twist.
