Smirnoff Vodka

About Smirnoff Vodka

Few brands in Vodka are more recognized than the name “Smirnoff”. It’s become synonymous
with flavor, rebellion, and innovation. Over the course of its nearly 300-year tenure in the liquor
industry, Smirnoff has seen several of its introductions to the world of alcohol spread to become
standards in the industry. Here’s about the history and brand, Smirnoff Vodka.

The History of Smirnoff

Smirnoff was born in Russia by Pyotr Smirnov, and it quickly became one of the most successful
vodka brands in vodka’s native land thanks to its innovative introduction of charcoal filtration. It
even became the official vodka of the Tsar. Smirnoff aimed to produce a robust, flavorful, and
smooth liquor, and it paid off.

Until Russia’s vodka industry was nationalized and purchased by the Russian government,
Smirnoff was on a steady incline of growth and profitability, but in 1907 the brand was sold to
Russia and the Smirnov family was forced to flee and set up shop in another part of the world,
largely floundering while experimenting with setting up operations in different parts of the world.
When Vladimir Smirnov, heir of Smirnov, migrated to New York in the 1930’s, just after the end
of American prohibition, he determined to lay roots in the United States and define what his
brand, now called Smirnoff (a change from the old brand’s name, Smirnov), would come to be.
Vladimir faced challenges in bringing Smirnoff to the West. Americans weren’t used to vodka.
The beverage had somewhat of a stigma among a dark-liquor drinking market, but Vladimir
eventually began to see some level of interest in his brand. It wasn’t enough, however, to
maintain operations. So he sold the brand for $15,000 in 1939 and it sold again for $1.4 billion in
1982 after amassing a solid customer base.

How Smirnoff is Made

Rather than a recipe, Smirnoff is committed to a flavor. Vodka was originally produced of
whatever starch was economically available to a region or locale, and Smirnoff has stuck with
that logic. Because of this, they use many ingredients to base their recipes like corn, grain,
potato, and even fruit. They use their charcoal filtration and consistent distilling methods to
ensure the same flavor regardless of the starch or sugar base used in production.

Where to Buy Smirnoff

Smirnoff is available everywhere vodka is sold worldwide. Its popularity is evidenced by its
consistent stock on the shelves of every bar, restaurant, liquor store, and liquor market.
Smirnoff’s vodkas and flavored malt beverages can be found in gas stations, grocery stores (like
Costco, Walmart, and Kroger), and markets everywhere.
